The
Tubman African American
Museum is dedicated to educating people about
African American art, history and culture. Since it’s
founding in 1981, this internationally recognized Museum
fulfills this mission through the collection,
preservation, study, exhibition and interpretation of
works of art and artifacts which foster and promote
public knowledge of these important
subjects.
Exhibitions
in the changing gallery space of the
Tubman
Museum
have focused on subjects as diverse as contemporary and
abstract African American art, soul food, black films,
and historic photography. Other galleries in the museum
explore local history, folk art, African American
achievement, and black inventors and inventions. As
these exhibitions suggest, the museum’s collections are
equally wide-ranging and include African Art, folk art,
contemporary African American art, photography,
sculpture, and historical photos, documents, and
artifacts.
The
Tubman
Museum
also represents a key educational resource for
Georgia
and the entire southeast region, offering a wide array
of programs, outreach activities, and publications
geared to adults, families, and students and teachers in
grades K-12 and college. Among these offerings are
after-school Tubman Children in the Arts classes,
teacher and student workshops, Art and History Outreach
intiatives, curriculum and program guides, summer
Heritage Camps for children aged 10 to 12, exhibition
tours and catalogues, and books, such as Macon Black and White:
An Unutterable Separation in the American Century by
Dr. Andrew Manis of Macon State
College and Standing on Their Shoulders” A
Celebration of the Wisdom of African American Women
by Dr. Catherine Meeks of Wesleyan
College.
Further,
the Museum hosts a variety of special events, including
All That Jazz, the Pan
African Festival of
Georgia
, the Tubman Torchbearers Gospel Concert, the Shelia
Awards, the Act of Courage Awards,
and a variety of art contests and award ceremonies that
involve students of all ages across
Central
Georgia
. These events promote African American art, history and
culture, just as the exhibits do, but in a way that
interacts with the community, the state, the nation and
the world. The Tubman
Museum
takes a leadership role when it comes to bringing a
diverse community together to celebrate African American
accomplishments.

All
That Jazz
is more than just Macon
’s treasured social event;
it
is also a fund-raising
opportunity for the Museum. Through the generosity of
many area businesses and private donations, the event is
able to offer a silent auction, where guests can bid on
many desirable items, including artwork by notable
accomplished artists from
Georgia
, weekend get-away packages and gift baskets with upscale
products. All the money raised at this event - through
sponsorships, ticket sales, and the auction go to
support the many important programs, exhibits,
publications, classes, and events that the Tubman Museum
offers.
In
order to host All That
Jazz, the Museum relies on the dedication
of community volunteers to help organize and plan the
event. Several people have given countless hours, year
after year, because of their love of the
Tubman
Museum
and the programs this museum provides. This year’s event
is made possible through the contributions and efforts
of the following volunteers: Paula Adams , Gordon
Bennett , Tony Blash, Mark Brooker , Katina Clay ,

Griffith , Adrian Harmon , Gail Mansfield , Janice
