Al "Big Luke" Lucas

The 5th Annual Al Lucas Memorial Scholarships will be awarded on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. The reception and awards program begins at 5:30. The awards are given annually to Bibb county high school scholar/athletes who are academically talented, athletically gifted, and involved in the community.  The awards are  given in honor of the late Al Lucas, a Northeast High School standout, Troy State All American, and talented pro football player.  Lucas died in 2005 while participating in an Arena Football League game with the Los Angeles Avengers.

Lucas played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Storm. and the Los Angeles Avengers.  He won the coveted Buck Buchanan Award in 1999 as the top defensive player in 1-AA Football and was named to theAll-Rookie team with the Tampa Bay Storm after helping the team win the Arenabowl championship.  He graduated from Northeast in 1996, and from Troy State in 2000 with a degree in Criminal Law.

The Community Foundation and the Lucas family invite the community to participate in awarding the scholarships and trophies to deserving high school senior athletes from all public high school that have athletic programs.

Al’s widow DeShonda and daughter Mariah , his parents David and Elaine Lucas and other family and board members keep Al’s memory alive by helping students attend college. Tax deductible donations of $25.00 for the awards program can be sent to the Community Foundation or for more information, call 750-9338 or 742-2387.  Tickets are also available at the door.
