Bibb Commissioner Bert Bivins III
To Be Honored As Man Of The Year By The Informer

by Amanda Smith

Bibb County Commissioner Bert Bivins, III has been selected to receive the Man of the Year Award by The Informer and will be honored at The Informer's Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Ceremony. The event will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 12 noon at New Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, located at 795 Maynard Street in Macon, Georgia.

A civil rights activist from a very young age, Bivins was the first African American to integrate the Bibb County public school system in 1963 and was involved in pickets and boycotts of public facilities in downtown Macon during the 1960s. He was arrested for going to the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) and following integration, Bivins served on a televised panel addressing issues pertaining to the community at large. In an effort to reach the public about minority issues, he wrote articles for the Macon Telegraph and the Macon Courier newspapers. Before his service as Commissioner began, Bivins helped others running for public office, often writing speeches and campaigning.

Bivins has served as a Bibb County Commissioner for three consecutive terms and an additional two years. He has served as Vice Chairman of the Commission and as Chairman or Vice Chairman on five of the nine Commission committees. Bivins has been appointed and currently serves as the County Representative on the Macon Water Authority, the Macon-Bibb County Land Bank Authority, the Macon-Bibb County Health Department, the Middle Georgia Regional Commission and the Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity Council. A dedicated and intelligent man, Bivins has been passionate about serving his community throughout his lifetime, earning him the honor of The Informer’s Man of the Year for 2012.
