Former Councilman Henry Ficklin has been making good use of his time away from City Council for the past three years. He has been earning a doctor of philosophy at Mercer University, Tift College of Education. Ficklin successfully defended his dissertation June 18, 2010. His work involves how the use of standards can help to close the achievement gap for African American males, who presently are ranked at the bottom of all statistical performance data. Ficklin said that being away from City Hall gave him the opportunity to pursue goals that he had postponed while serving the public.
The commencement exercise is scheduled for August 14th at the Atlanta Campus of Mercer University. Dr. Ficklin is presently employed at Southwest High School where he is the director of the Law Academy.
