Monica R. Smith Named CVB President & CEO

The board of directors for the Macon-Bibb County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) has selected Monica R. Smith as President & CEO, effective July 1, 2010.

Smith, 36, will be responsible for the Bureau's overall daily operations and implementation of policymaking and strategies for the organization. This position is responsible for directing the organization while providing oversight of marketing Macon-Bibb County, GA, utilizing hotel-motel sales tax revenue.

"Smith is a destination marketing and sales executive whose leadership abilities and her strategic thinking are what we need during this time of change and transition," said Ann Smith, Chair, CVB Board of Directors. "Her 13 years of extensive knowledge of sales and management will help guide our mission of increasing sales for the new and existing inventory in Macon-Bibb County. "Smith has exceptional communication skills with an ability to understand and communicate a vision of the big picture," she added.

Relationships are important to Smith. She believes in communicating with community stakeholders to understand their needs while also establishing relationships with meeting planners, hoteliers, attractions and targeted markets, such as the lucrative SMERF (sports, medical, educational, reunion and fraternal) groups.

Smith most recently served as the director of sales and client services for the Pasadena Convention & Visitors Bureau in Pasadena, CA. She also has served as vice president of sales for the Newport Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau and as an account executive with the CVB of Greater Cleveland.

A graduate of Cornell University, Smith is a member of Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and a board member for MPI’s Southern California Chapter. She is also a member of the Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI), Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI), American Society of Association Executives (ASAE),

National Coalition of Black Meeting Planners (NCBMP), Financial & Insurance Planners Association (FIPA), and Christian Meetings & Conventions Association (CMCA). In 2001, she earned the prestigious designation of Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) from the Convention Industry Council. Furthering her industry expertise, she became a Certified Association Sales Executive (CASE) through the Professional Conference Management Association in 2003. Smith is currently participating in DMAI's Certified Destination Management Executive program, which is recognized by the industry as its highest educational achievement, focusing on vision, leadership, productivity and the implementation of business strategies. She is expected to complete the program in July 2010.

She will reside in Macon with her husband Andre and their three children, where they look forward to being closer to family in her hometown of Jacksonville, FL.

The Macon Bibb County Convention & Visitors Bureau is the non-profit destination marketing organization of Macon and Bibb County. Funded by hotel-motel sales tax collected from visitors staying in local properties, the CVB was created in 1980 exclusively to market Macon and Bibb County regionally, domestically and internationally, to both groups and individuals, in order to enhance the economy and increase employment.
