I am dating a really nice guy who is retired military. We get along pretty good, but I have one problem: his relationship with my son. Jacob is 6 years old and good kid. He is well-mannered and respectful of authority. He is also a bit shy and quiet until he gets to know you. Tom (the male friend) is very short with Jacob. It seems like Jacob can't do anything right; every little thing Jacob does is followed by correction from Tom. It's gotten to where when I tell Jacob that Tom is coming over, he is obviously disappointed and becomes even more withdrawn. What should I do?

Dear Lynn,

The last thing you need in your life is a man that browbeats your child. It appears that Tom could be jealous of your relationship with Jacob. Unless you want your son to be emotionally damaged, if not physically abused at some later date, I strongly suggest you kick this man to the curb.
