Roy & Greg's Movie Review

Plot Apocalypto gives us a bird's eye view at the decline of the Mayan civilization due to decadence, savagery, and a corrupt ruling class.

What's Going On: The film is set in Yucatec, Maya with no dialogue, just English subtitles.  As a peaceful village is attacked by another tribe, those who live are taken to Maya City to be slaves.  Among them is Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), who has hidden his pregnant wife and young son in an underground cave and is desperate to return to rescue them before they starve to death.

Why You Should Go: The question is, should you?  With no dialogue, this film is action-driven and the action is limited to ultra, ultra violence.  (Hearts are torn from chests, a jaguar chews a man's face off and decapitations abound.)  This may be the most expensive grind house film ever made.

Ratings Greg: 5 out of 10

Blood Diamond

Plot A farmer (Djimon Hounsou), a smuggler (Leonardo DiCaprio), and a syndicate of businessmen fight to possess a priceless diamond during civil war in Sierra Leone in 1999.

What's Going On: A farmer (Hounsou) is forced to work in the mining camps of Kono, after rebels destroy his village.  There he comes upon a priceless diamond and manages to hide it just before the camp is attacked by Afrikaner forces.  When smuggler Danny Archer (DiCaprio) catches wind of the prize, he joins forces with the farmer to recapture the jewel.

Why You Should Go: This is an action-packed movie with great performances by Hounsou (Amistad, Gladiator) and DiCaprio (The Departed) plus, you will never again look at a jewelry store in the same light after seeing 'Diamond'.  This is a must-see film.

Ratings Greg: 9 out of 10
