Former Georgia Labor Commissioner and Democratic nominee for United States Senate, Michael Thurmond has joined the law firm of Butler, Wooten & Fryhofer, LLP (BWF).  Mr. Thurmond's practice will focus on serious personal injury cases, products liability, class actions, and whistleblower claims.   Mr. Thurmond will also lead the firm’s ongoing efforts to educate and inform the public of their legal rights under state and federal law.

"We are honored to have Michael Thurmond as part of our firm," said Jim Butler, BWF senior partner.  "We believe his decades of public service, legal acumen and communication skills make him uniquely qualified to advocate on behalf of our clients."

"I am excited about this unique opportunity to work with one of America's most successful trial law firms," stated Mr. Thurmond. "This will allow me to further my lifelong commitment to helping citizens who have been unlawfully wronged."

Mr. Thurmond graduated with honors from Paine College with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and religion and earned a juris doctorate degree from the University of South Carolinas School of Law.  He also completed the Political Executives program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

He served as the assistant city attorney for the city of Athens and established the Thurmond law firm in 1979. In 1986, he became the first African-American to be elected to the Georgia General Assembly from Athens since Reconstruction. He recently completed his third term as Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Labor.
