Chatham County, Georgia Boasts Impressive Numbers In Voter Registration

By Amanda Smith

The Chatham County Voter Registration Office in Savannah, Georgia reported a total number of 135,134 registered voters for the upcoming presidential election in November.  This number is 16,000 more voters than those registered for the 2004 election.

These numbers aren’t surprising – long lines have been the norm recently at the office, with more women than men registering to vote.  Find below some additional figures provided by the Chatham County Voter Registration and the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office.

New African American Voters

New White Voters

Female Voters

Male Voters

7,509

4,500

72,122

57,737

No breakdown was reported by age although many in the long lines were observed to be young people.  Early voting is still going on in Chatham County and almost 15,000 individuals have already cast their votes.

These numbers are only for “active” voters.  Remember that if you haven’t voted in some years, you may be considered an inactive voter in your county.  Check with the voter registration office in your area to insure that you are still eligible to vote in this very important upcoming election.
