Summerow Returns To Home Church In Macon

by Amanda Smith

The Reverend Dr. Stephen D. Summerow has announced his imminent return to his home church, Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church on Rev. J.L. Mills Way in Macon, Georgia.

Reverend Summerow has pastored Oldfield Baptist Church in Perry, Georgia for the past 7 1/2 years, but recently made the decision to return to Greater Friendship, the church where his grandfather, the Reverend J.L. Mills, pastored for 43 years before his passing 8 years ago. "The Lord pressed on my heart to go home to the church where I was baptized, preached my first sermon, and where my grandfather preached for so many years," said Reverend Summerow. Just two weeks after his grandfather’s passing, Reverend Summerow became the pastor of Oldfield Baptist Church in Perry.

Reverend Summerow served as an Associate Minister at Hopewell Baptist Church in Norcross, Georgia of which the Rev. Dr. William L. Sheals is the Pastor. He then returned to Greater Friendship Baptist Church where he served as Associate Minister, Bible Study Instructor and Sunday School Instructor for Young Adults and Teens from August 1999 until January 2003. Reverend Summerow also established, coordinated and taught New Members Orientation at Greater Friendship from April 2002 until January 2003. Ministry and preaching skills developed and were enhanced under the tutelage of Summerow's grandfather, the late Reverend J.L. Mills. Reverend Summerow was licensed to preach in April 1999 and was ordained by the Georgia Baptist Ministers Union in August of 2000. Since January of 2003, Reverend Summerow has led the Oldfield Baptist Church in Perry, Georgia where membership and ministry work has increased dramatically. Reverend Summerow will preach his first return sermon at Greater Friendship on August 1, 2010.

The Reverend Summerow is also a licensed optometrist and is Owner and CEO of Summerow & Associates, with offices in Sears Optical and J.C. Penney Optical in Macon, Georgia.

The Reverend Dr. Stephen Summerow is a member of numerous professional organizations including:

• Treasurer, Union Baptist Missionary and Educational Association of Middle Georgia

• Asst. Secretary of Finance, Baptist Ministers Union of Macon and Vicinity, Inc.

Summerow's nephew, Xeryus Gittens, who is now 21 years old and a senior at Savannah State University.
