Cynthia McKinney May Run For President As Green Party Candidate

By Amanda Smith

Former U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney is listed as a 2008 Green Party presidential candidate on the California Secretary of State’s website.  She is also reported as working on her PhD at the University of California, Berkley, but this is unconfirmed.  Although McKinney issued a statement on September 10, 2007 that she had declined to run for president, her name remains on the ballot.

McKinney became interested in the Green Party ticket for a possible presidential run in 2004 after questioning her future affiliation with the Democratic Party.  During a radio interview on WBAI, she stated, “With the failure of the Democratic Congress to repeal the Patriot Act, the Secret Evidence Act, the Military Tribunals Act, I have to seriously question my relationship with the Democratic Party. The idea has not been ruled out. All the current Democrats running for president support the principle of potential military action against Iran; none of them is for impeachment of the President. They can’t speak for me. I am open to a lot of ideas in 2008.”

McKinney has neither confirmed nor denied these reports, but she has recently posted several statements on her website that she may be running for president in 2008.
