Roy & Greg's Movie Review

Flags of Our Fathers

Plot This is the story of three of the six men (Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, Adam Beach) who raised the flag at the battle of Iwo Jima, a turning point of WWII.

The Good: Clint Eastwood's direction continues to evolve.  The battle scenes were as realistic as any ever shown on film.  Also, the saga of the three GIs who survived Iwo Jima to become celebs, but slowly realize that they're merely pawns in the game of politics, is superbly done.

The Bad: War movies and period movies generally don't do well at the box office, so flags faces a double whammy.

Ratings Greg: 8 out of 10

                    Roy: 7.5 out of 10

The Prestige

Plot - 18th century London is the backdrop for this tale of revenge and one-upmanship, as two rival magicians (Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale) become bitter adversaries after one blames the other for the death of his wife.

The Good: Jackman and Bale, especially the latter with his teddy boy attire and cockney accent, really capture the atmosphere of late 1800s London.  The supporting cast (Michael Caine, Scarlett Johannson, David Bowie) is sold as well.

The Bad: The movie's pacing, the back and forth attempts at vengeance by Bale and Jackman remind you of a road runner / Wile E. Coyote cartoon after awhile, becoming intentionally amusing.  Still an interesting portrait of obsession and the truth behind illusion.

Ratings Greg: 8 out of 10

                 Roy : 9 out of 10
