Brenda Sutton Runs For
Bibb County Board of Education District 1 Seat

by Amanda Smith

Lifelong middle Georgia resident Brenda Sutton has qualified and is a candidate for the District 1 seat on the Bibb County Board of Education currently held by incumbent Ella Carter. The primary election will be held on July 31, 2012.

Sutton is an honor graduate of Morris Brown College and holds a Masters Degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. She has served as adjunct professor at the University of Phoenix and Waycross College and has attended numerous professional institutes, seminars and continuing education courses. She is currently completing her post-graduate work, focusing on women's leadership development. In addition to her professional studies, Ms. Sutton is a Georgia registered civil and domestic mediator, with a specialization in domestic violence. She has also developed a relationship with Mercer University Law School, providing second and third year law students with internship opportunities.

Since 2008, Sutton has served as the Program Director for the Houston and Bibb Judicial Circuits Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) program, serving the citizens of the Middle Georgia area. The ADR program provides mediation case management, training and community education for the courts. Under her direction, ADR has experienced a 200% average growth, with an expected continued upward growth trend.

Sutton has been a leader in youth leadership development for the past twenty years, equipping numerous youth with leadership skills. Through social integration, Ms. Sutton uses peer mentoring as a tool to shape leadership expectations for low achieving youth. Ms. Sutton created, developed and received DHR grant funding to conduct the Southeast Georgia Leadership Academy at Epworth by the Sea on Jekyll Island.

As a community leader, Ms. Sutton is a graduate of Leadership Waycross, Leadership Pierce and was selected to attend and graduated from the Georgia Leadership Academy, focusing on economic development. She is a certified and registered trainer in "Parenting Your Out of Control Teen"; "Too Good for Drugs and Violence"; "Second Step, Violence Prevention"; "Prime for Life Risk Reduction"; "Fanning Institute of Leadership" and has attended numerous professional development seminars, including a scholarship to attend "Abuse and Victimization in Life-span Perspective" and "Victimization in Life" at Harvard University in Boston. Finally, she is a registered Risk Reduction Instructor for the State of Georgia and teaches Risk Reduction Class for the Georgia Driving School.

Sutton believes her experience and qualifications make her uniquely qualified for the position of District 1 on the Bibb County Board of Education. "I believe that now is the time to bring fresh new leadership to the Bibb County Board of Education," she said. "We are in desperate times, experiencing budget shortfalls; board infighting; lack of adequate textbooks and an exodus of experienced and qualified teachers leaving our school system," she continued. "I believe that my skills and life experience can provide the board with collaborative leadership that will properly change the focus to the priority of educating our children."
