Sam Hart Announces Resignation Of Bibb County Commission Seat

By Amanda Smith

Bibb County commissioner Sam Hart has recently announced that he will resign from his seat on the commission due to a change in residency.  Hart, who has represented Bibb Countys District 1 for more than 10 years, regrets having to make the announcement, but says he is doing what is best for his family.  I will always appreciate the opportunity that I have had to serve as District 1 Commissioner, Hart said in a recent press release.  I will continue to serve the citizens of District 1 as ably as I can until my change of residency is finalized.

However, Harts residential move to Barrington Hall, a community in District 3, will not affect his ability to run against commission Chairman Charlie Bishop in 2008, a possible run that is rumored and was printed in the Macon Telegraph on March 8, 2007.  Until now, Bishop had avoided the issue, but now says that he will seek re-election to his seat.

Upon the vacating of Harts seat, the county must hold a special election to fill the spot.  The absence of one commissioner leaves the board with only four members, a position that often causes a 2-2 split in voting, a split that the board is often unable to overcome.
