Watkins Offers Fresh Start If Elected To Macon City Council

By Amanda Smith

As a graduate right out of Georgia Southern University with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science, Virgil Watkins is ready to go to work for the city of Macon.  He is seeking the Macon City Council seat of Ward 4, Post 3 in the upcoming citywide elections.

Though young and preparing to pursue a Masters Degree in Economics, Watkins has already achieved much during a 4-year internship for Macon mayor C. Jack Ellis, including serving as the mayor’s personal assistant for two years, as Assistant to Senior Administrative Officer Sam Henderson, and as Youth Services Specialist.  In these capacities, he did everything from acting as liaison between city council and the Mayor’s office, attending committee meetings, presenting proclamations, supervising interns, preparing agendas for meetings, editing press releases, conducting research, planning events, and much, much more.

“I’m running to serve the community,” Virgil said in a recent interview.  “I understand the political process and I have formed relationships with community leaders that will help me effectively improve the quality of life in Ward 4.”

Virgil also has plenty of political experience, including the following:

·        Fundraising Co-Chair, Committee to Support Mayor C. Jack Ellis

·        Volunteer, Taylor for One Georgia, Governor, State of Georgia

·        Canvasser, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee

·        Strategist (twice)

·        Assistant Deputy Campaign Manager, Committee to Re-Elect Mayor, City of Macon

·        Field Commander, Campaign for Bibb County Board of Education, County Wide

·        Delegate, Georgia Democratic Party, serving on the Platform Committee

·        Bibb County Board of Elections

Virgil’s accomplishments include receiving the President’s Student Service Award (2001, 2002), being named Eagle Entertainment Member of the Year (2003), and Committee Chairman at the 2006 National Model African Union.  While in college he was a member of the NAACP, the Lions Club, the Southeastern Model African Union, the National Model African Union, and the Service Employees International Union.

Currently the Vice-Chair of the Work Force Investment Board Youth Council, Virgil would like to bring a fresh start to Macon by:

·        Revitalizing neighborhoods

·        Implementing a marketing plan that will attract retail back to Macon

·        Re-establishing crime prevention programs such as community policing and midnight basketball to make our neighborhoods safer

·        Establishing an ex-offender re-entry program for those who have paid their debt to society, and

·        Improve recreation facilities for seniors and youth by securing funds from state and private resources
