Will Sam Nunn Be Barack Obama’s Running Mate?

By Amanda Smith

After months of heated campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination, a race that proved divisive for the party, the next big question on everyone’s mind is who Obama will choose for his running mate.

Hillary Clinton was quick to offer when it became clear that Obama would come away with the nomination, but according to a CNN report, she is only one of a fairly long list of hopefuls being considered for the position of vice presidential running mate.  The list includes:

·        Hillary Clinton – Although choosing Hillary would help secure her voting base of women and white working-class Democrats for Obama, opinions are mixed on this choice

·        Evan Bayh – Democratic Senator from Indiana, Bayh served on both amed services and intelligence committees in the Senate

·        Michael Bloomberg – New York Mayor Bloomberg chose not to run as an Independent for the presidency and he has been seen as a possible running mate for Obama or McCain; would have trouble attracting white voters

·        Joseph Biden – Democratic Senator from Delaware, Biden could offer tremendous foreign affairs experience, but having been on the Senate so long (six terms), he doesn’t bring to mind a picture of change

·        Bill Richardson – Hispanic New Mexico Governor, Richardson could bring in the Latino vote in addition to his foreign policy experience as a former United Nations ambassador

Former U.S. Senator and Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman, Sam Nunn could be an excellent choice as running mate for Obama

·        Sam Nunn – Currently the co-chairman of the NTI (Nuclear Threat Initiative), a charitable organization that works to reduce global threats from nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons, Nunn served 24 years as a United States Senator from Georgia.  Born in Macon and raised in Perry, Georgia, Nunn is the former Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman and would bring political experience and strong national defense credentials to Obama’s ticket if chosen as his running mate.

Other possible running mates include Wesley Clark (former NATO commander); Chris Dodd (Democratic Senator from Connecticut); Charles Hagel (Republican friend of John McCain); Ed Rendell (Pennsylvania Governor and Hillary supporter); Kathleen Sebelius (Republican Governor of Kansas); and John Edwards (former North Carolina Senator).

The field of hopefuls is long and varied and interest is growing as Obama continues to remain silent about his decision.  His vice presidential selection team now includes Caroline Kennedy (daughter of John F. Kennedy), Jim Johnson (former Fannie Mae CEO), and former Deputy U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
