teacher is exercising a big smile after a million-dollar
Georgia Lottery win.

$1 million dollar winner Gary
Simpson
Simpson, a resident of McDonough, purchased the
winning ticket at Danfair Express, located at 129
Highway 27 E. in Americus . He was
traveling for his aunt’s 80th birthday party
and didn’t realize he held a lucky ticket until he
returned home.
“I was shocked when I saw that I’d won,” he said.
“I just wanted to make sure it was
true.”
Simpson, who works at Eagle’s Landing Middle
School , has been teaching for 26 years. He shared that
he plays the lottery because the proceeds benefit
education.
“It’s the one reason I play. It’s fun, and it
funds educational programs in Georgia ,” he
said.
According to Simpson, he is considering early
retirement and plans to travel more.

p.m.
Georgia Lottery Corporation President and CEO

oversized check during Picnic in the Park, a lunchtime
concert series hosted by Welcome 2 the Neighborhood, LLC
(W2TN) which is owned by Lanelle Henderson. McDonough
Mayor Billy Copeland was on hand for the
festivities.
This is the fourth year for this annual event
which serves as a mid-day community event and marketing
opportunity for local and national companies looking to
target newcomers. The series takes place on the
McDonough Square each Friday in June 2007 (except June
29) from 11a.m. - 2 p.m. The live entertainment kicked
off with Atlanta ’s own Ron
James and continues with the Thomas Tillman Band, Chris
Cauley and Tammy Allen and the Colors of
Jazz.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery
Corporation has returned over $9 billion to the state of
Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery
profits go to pay for specific educational programs
including Georgia ’s HOPE Scholarship Program and
Georgia ’s Prekindergarten Program. More than 1 million
students have received HOPE, and more than 790,000
4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary
prekindergarten
program.
