The passing of Rev. Dr. Derek Maurice Dumas on April 17, 2026, at Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center, has left an indelible void not only in Macon but across the nation. Widely regarded as one of the most gifted preachers of his generation and a master hymn raiser, his transition from labor to reward sent shock waves throughout the religious community and beyond.
Born and reared in South Macon, Dr. Dumas demonstrated leadership early in life, serving as president of his senior class at Southwest High School. His spiritual foundation was laid at Mount Vernon Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. Henry C. Ficklin, where he received his early Christian training and developed a love for the Word of God and the music of the church.
Answering a higher call, he later joined his grandfather, Rev. Moses Dumas, at Greater Lizzieboro Baptist Church. There, he was ordained as a deacon and soon acknowledged his divine calling into the ministry. Upon the passing of his grandfather, he was called to pastor the very church his grandfather had faithfully built—a monumental task that many believed would be too great to follow. Yet, Rev. Dumas rose to the occasion with humility, power, and divine anointing, proving himself worthy to carry forward a rich and sacred legacy.
His ministry was marked by unwavering commitment. At a time when many churches shortened or eliminated extended revival meetings, Rev. Dumas held firmly to the tradition of a full week of revival—and even expanded it. He understood deeply that people needed the gospel, and he refused to limit their opportunity to hear it. His conviction spoke volumes: the Word of God must go forth, regardless of convenience or cultural shift.
Despite enduring physical challenges, he never complained. His faith remained steadfast, his preaching powerful, and his spirit unbroken. He exemplified perseverance, embodying the very essence of a servant-leader.
In eulogizing this faithful soldier, Rev. Dr. Henry C. Ficklin reflected on his life as one worthy to be numbered among Heaven’s Honor Roll—the faithful witnesses recorded in Hebrews chapter 11. In a moving tribute, Dr. Walter L. Glover Jr. poetically declared that Rev. Dumas had “graduated” from this earthly life Magna Cum Laude, signifying a life lived with excellence, faithfulness, and divine purpose.
The celebration of life service, held at Beulahland Bible Church on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at noon, drew more than two thousand mourners—evidence of the profound impact he made in such a short time.
Rev. Dumas leaves to cherish his memory a devoted mother, Dr. Geraldine Dumas, and his beloved fiancée, Marva K. Lamar. As an only child, his bond with his mother was especially deep, and her strength now stands as a testament to the faith she instilled in her son.
He was an active servant in the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia Inc., where he served as Vice President of his district, and he maintained strong ties with the Union Association. Additionally, he was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Lambda Chapter, exemplifying scholarship, perseverance, and uplift in every arena of his life.
Today, we do not merely mourn—we celebrate a life well lived. For the record is clear, the testimony is strong, and the witness undeniable:
“Servant of God, well done,
Rest from thy loved employ;
The battle fought, the victory won,
Enter thy Master’s joy.”
Indeed, a faithful soldier has been promoted Home.
