The launch of Genesis Academy represents a critical milestone for at-risk young adults in Middle Georgia who are navigating difficulties within the court system. Spearheaded by Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney Anita Howard, this initiative offers a proactive solution for non-violent offenders aged 17–26 as an alternative to traditional court prosecution.

Genesis Academy, as described by District Attorney Anita Howard, is much more than a pretrial diversion program. Genesis Academy is a life diversion initiative. The word genesis, by definition, means the origin, new beginning, and/or the coming into being of something.

The introduction of Genesis Academy garnered significant support and enthusiasm from a wide range of stakeholders, including local officials, youth, clergy, professionals, law enforcement, media, school representatives, and Howard’s own team. Hosted at the historic Douglass Theatre on February 20, the inaugural event highlights District Attorney Anita Howard’s continued dedication to fostering a more just criminal justice system and a safer community.

District Attorney Anita Howard believes that, “we can hold people accountable without destroying lives.” Non-violent offenders are returning to our communities, sooner rather than later. So when faced with the question of how those non-violent offenders need to return to the community? District Attorney Anita Howard says, “BETTER! Better for the well being of the community and safety of the public.” A safer community is what fueled DA Howard to create Genesis Academy.

Through Genesis Academy, Howard seeks to address the backlog of court cases by diverting qualifying individuals to a rehabilitation-focused enterprise. Building upon the success of her RISE initiative, which prioritizes public safety and support for vulnerable youth, Howard aims to provide a pathway for individuals to turn their lives around.

Collaborating closely with law enforcement and community organizations in Bibb, Crawford, and Peach counties, Howard’s office is committed to implementing and operationalizing these vital initiatives. Genesis Academy represents a crucial step in Howard’s ongoing efforts to drive positive change within the criminal justice system and offer a fresh start to those in need.
